painting women and light

Through Artists’ Eyes is a class for women who want to find out more about themselves by learning to appreciate the beauty of their own bodies through modelling and painting. To begin the process, each woman has an individual, private, nude modelling session in my studio. She explores her body in a relaxed, safe, quiet atmosphere, while images are captured on still camera for use as reference for her own painting. On Friday evening, we meet as a class to talk about the modelling sessions. Each woman chooses an image of herself to paint. Then on the weekend, the group comes together for two days of guided painting, with the goal of completing their self-portraits by the end of the class.

Materials required:

  1. 30 x 40-inch stretched canvas, painted black with either Mars black or black gesso

  2. White water-soluble pencil (I use Lumocolor or Aquarel, and regular watercolour pencils work, too)

  3. Golden acrylic paints: cadmium red light, cadmium red dark, cadmium yellow medium, pthalo blue (either shade), titanium white. Note, Golden makes a line of slow-drying acrylics called Golden Open. Avoid these like the plague - at least for this class.

  4. Corona Sabre 1 1/2-inch sash brush (available at some Benjamin Moore paint stores, and at my studio)

  5. Bucket

  6. Paint rag

  7. Large sealing container (roughly 9 by 13 inches and maybe 2 inches deep, to be used as a palette. Tupperware works, but you should be able to find something way cheaper and just as useful at the dollar store, in the kitchen section)

Tuition:  $350, which includes lunch both days, dinner on Saturday, accommodation Friday and/or Saturday night if desired, and breakfasts for those staying with us.

Times:

  1. Friday: 7 to 9:30 p.m.

  2. Saturday: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (plus dinner, and free time for painting, talking or walking in the woods)

  3. Sunday: 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
