Learn the building blocks of colour and streamline your acrylic technique, using just four hues (plus white).
I’ll teach you the art of colour mixing right on the canvas, as well as other techniques that will simplify and improve your work. You’ll practise the ancient art of gridding and discover the advantages of using a single brush for everything from the finest detail to the broadest wash.
I supply the photo reference, and you’ll have fun as I show you how to let the painting flow. By the end of the weekend you’ll have created a finished work - ready to hang on your wall.
Materials required:
•30 x 40-inch stretched canvas, painted black with either Mars black or black gesso
•White water-soluble pencil (I use Lumocolor or Aquarel, and regular watercolour pencils work, too)
•Golden acrylic paints: cadmium red light, cadmium red dark, cadmium yellow medium, pthalo blue (either shade), titanium white. Note, Golden makes a line of slow-drying acrylics called Golden Open. Avoid these like the plague - at least for this class.
•Corona Sabre 1 1/2-inch sash brush (available at some Benjamin Moore paint stores, and at my studio)
•Bucket
•Paint rag
•Large sealing container (roughly 9 by 13 inches and maybe 2 inches deep, to be used as a palette. Tupperware works, but you should be able to find something way cheaper and just as useful at the dollar store, in the kitchen section)
Tuition: $230 + GST, which includes lunch both days
Time: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days
