Nicholas Pearce biography

Nicholas Pearce has been painting portraits since his early 20s. Three decades ago, he began focusing on women – faces, nudes, and the dynamic sensuality of flamenco.

He attended the Alberta College of Art in Calgary, then gravitated to the media, working in the art department for CBC-TV. He then became illustrations editor for the Calgary Herald, where he specialized in portraiture, and in capturing likenesses during courtroom trials.

Nicholas later moved to Canada’s West Coast to live on a sailboat and make the transition from illustration to fine art. After experimenting with photorealism in watercolour, he chose to work in acrylics on canvas, developing a more relaxed representational style inspired by the Impressionists. Today he uses a limited palette of four colours plus white, and a single, large brush for everything from fine details to tonal washes. He has also developed a scribble technique for black and white portraits.

Nicholas’s paintings are in private and corporate collections in Canada, the U.S. and Europe, and he is represented by galleries in Western Canada. He also teaches classes and workshops, and is one of the artists who was chosen to give demonstrations and meet art lovers at Painters at Painter’s Lodge in Campbell River, B.C., every May.
